The village of Drachenstein, nestled in a river valley between two snowcapped mountains, was teeming with life as it was Market Day.
I made my way past the stalls in the village square until, at last I spotted what I was after.
The Drachenstein Grog Shoppe was a small Inn in a side street off the square. I pushed open the door and entered.
I get a tankard of ale and find a seat near the window.

"Kaar Urik". I say to myself, "You could get to like it here."

Staring at the hubub of market life through the window, the remains of a tankard of something quite miscellaneous cupped in my hands, I shift my legs... I am bored, and reliving the heated conversations of past days seems to be my only company at present. It was fine for a while, just me and my memories, and then the peace is shattered... someone else has just walked in...

With a sigh I sidle closer to the fire, one eye on the stranger, another on my beer. Why I should keep staring into the dregs of this foul liquid is beyond me... but anything is better then making eye contact with the tall human. I have learnt from past experience that it is better to remain inconspicuous.

As I sat relaxing after my long trek through the mountain passes I looked around at the other patrons of the tavern. Most were villagers and farmers from the surrounding countryside.
Then a female elf sitting by the fire caught my eye. She looked so out of place and unhappy huddled over a nearly empty tankard, as if she was afraid of being noticed.
I gave her a friendly nod then concentrated on the contents of my tankard.

After treadging countless miles over unfamiliar ground and beating the daylights out a number of mad orcs terrorizing a family with small children, I needed a drink, food, bath, and a bed, in that order. Finally stumbling upon a town, I spy the tavern right off and head for it. I open the door and enter into a small but comfortable room occupied by some of the town's regulars, I assume. "Innkeep, a very large tankard of your best ale. Have it brought to this table here, the one beside your warm hearth." I am not a quiet person and I was somewhat afraid that I might have sounded as if I were yelling.

I notice a tall human, somewhat wiley and very suspicious at one of the tables. I adjust my purse, making very sure that the purse strings are tightly tied and secure, then I make my way to the table beside the fire.

There is an elven maid huddled close to the fire. I try to apologize subtly but I think it might have come out a bit harsh. I have a loud, hard voice that can scare little children and kitties. "Excuse me, miss, do ya mind if I sit down here. My feet are killing me."

I drop heavily into the chair before she can reply. It rocks back a little and I have to lean forward to bring it back to all four legs. My ale arrives and I order food, a bath, and ask about a room. The total for all comes to 3 silver coins which I reluctantly count out for the Innkeeper. I wolf down the food and guzzle the ale, wiping my arm across my mouth to clean any food particles or foam off. I then lean the chair casually against the wall and lounge for a while. "Seems like a quiet little place here. What's the name of this quaint little hole, anyway?" I ask no one in particular, but I look at the tall, suspicious man as I ask.

As I was sitting, wondering what my next move would be, a rather muscular but
attractive young woman caught my attention. I liked the confident way she moved.
I look up as she speaks, "I think it's called Drachenstein, only just got here myself"
I get to my feet and pick up her empty tankard, "Let me refill that for you."

The stranger drifts into the tavern, a patchwork array of leather and canvas. Dust from his cloak rises into sunbeams which peer through the shutter slats. The tip of his rapier drags upon the floor as he takes a seat, etching a thin line.
He glares out with intensity below the rim of his hat, studying the room and it's occupants with both hands flat upon the table as if he were holding it down.

*I've got to keep my wits about me, dispite this maddening pain*

It has been the better part of a month since I parted ways with Ironhand's caravan, and though the weather has been not too bad I feel the need to sleep under a roof. Even this shabby dive, obviously built for humans. I step inside and move to one side of the door while my eyes adjust.

None of the chairs look stout enough to bear my weight but no matter, there seems to be a nice warm hearth. I signal the proprietor, who has been standing in shock staring at me, to bring food and drink.

The tall man (that I assume might be a thief) answered my question. "Drachenstein... hmmm, I'm not to familiar with the language or the name."

After speaking to me, the man rises, taking his tankard then reaching for mine, offers to have it refilled. Hmm, smooth mannered, I thought. "Sure thing, Kind Sir. Perhaps we could resume our...conversation. You are welcome to enjoy my table." I instinctively pull my purse to an inaccessible location on my belt and again I make sure the strings are tied securely. This man may be polite and interesting, not to mention not too hard on the eyes, but I am still going to be cautious.

About this time two strangers enter the tavern. I assume they aren't together as one goes straight to a table and sits down, holding the table with both hands as if it is about to run away from him. The other stranger is tall, very tall and is dressed strangely. He stands in the doorway, aware of several pairs of eyes on him. Signaling the innkeeper he approaches another table situated close to the hearth. I had never seen his like before. I take my small skinning knife from its home fastened to the back of my belt and start cleaning my fingernails, not because they needed it, but because I did not want to be seen studing the tall stranger. As he sits, I give him a short common curtesy nod and resume my fake nail cleaning.

I get both tankards refilled and carefully make my way back to the fire.
The bar is getting rather crowded and a couple of very strange travelers have entered, one looking very distressed and may be in need of help. Not the sort of man to be approached lightly though.

I step aside to allow the other stranger passage, I don't argue with someone of that size and armed to the teeth to boot.

Placing the tankards on the table I sink into the chair and look carefully at my new companion.
"My name is Kaar, not that you will have heard of it" *chuckle* "I'm just passing through."

I watch the way she handles the small but obviously sharp knife. Interesting!!

"I am aiming you bastard!" The stranger mutters as he shakes his head.

*Shrugs and sinks into his chair hoping that no one noticed his bizaare outburst*
